Getting a pet can be very costly. There are different types of breed available and each one has a different personality and needs that you have to take care of. If you are set on getting a new pet dog, why not try to choose among the many dogs in your local animal shelter. These dogs need a home and a loving family that can care for them.
Picking out the right dog at the shelter should be done with proper care and considerations. It really isn’t as easy as choosing the cutest one among the lot. You have to keep in mind a few factors that might affect you, your family and the dog.
Before actually going to the shelter, think about what you want. Do you want a big dog or a small one? Do you want a guard dog or a dog your kids can play with? Think about your priorities and what you are willing to compromise.
The next step is to go to the shelter and fill out a form. Information such as your address and whether you own the house or you are renting it may be crucial. The staff of the animal shelter is concerned about the dog. They are hoping that wherever he or she ends up with, care and love would be provided.
Get to know the dogs in the shelter. Observe how they react to strangers and how they interact with each other. See which ones are playful or aggressive. You may also want to know where they came from or if they interact with other pets easily. This is very important if you own other dogs or other animals as it would be very hard, not to mention annoying, if you always have to keep the dogs away from each other. Finding out their history is important so you would know if the dog was subjected to trauma or if he was malnourished and other possible problems he or she might have.
Lastly, play with the dog you have chosen. Shelters usually have a yard where you can bring out the dog and interact with him or her. You can see how he or she is and you would be able to gauge if he or she is really the dog for you.
When you bring him home, observe him for a week. If you feel that he or she is not the right dog for you, return him to the shelter and try to choose another one. Picking out the right dog at the shelter is a process that cannot be hastened. Take your time and soon you would be welcoming a loveable pet in your family. And hey, maybe you want a cat too! And get the CatGenie if you do!
